Image file formats that every designer must know

There are many image file formats available for the web and graphics. People choose their file format according to their needs.

Basically ,images have two types – first is Raster Images and the second is Vector Images. All image files comes under these two type.

In this article, we will discuss some image file formats that we use in our daily lives.

Raster Images

Raster images are made with a grid of dots which are known as pixels. Here each pixel is has a color value. You can say raster images are pixel-based and resolution-dependent. It definitely works great when we create rich and detailed images.

There are many file format comes under raster image file format –

JPEG
JPEG stands for a joint photographic expert group. Mostly this format is for digital photography. This is a widely known file format and suitable for web and print. Anyone can use it to store or sent photos. It has a smaller file size and support by every image editor and web browser on the market. JPEG is free and easy to use.

PNG
PNG stands for portable network graphics. This format is commonly for web design where you need to provide a transparent background or a semi-transparent image. Generally, it has higher compression rates and can’t be animated.

GIF
GIF stands for graphics interchange format. Basically, it is a small animation and video footage. It also supports up to 8 bits per pixel for each image.GIFs did the job better than words it is more communicative. Especially, GIF is perfect for the web.

TIFF
TIFF stands for the tagged image file format and popular among graphic artists. This format is for the publishing industry and photographers. It has extremely high quality. It handles images and data within a single file including header tags such as size, definition, image data, etc.

Vector Images

Vector images are built with mathematical shapes and small graphics like points, lines, and curves.

There are many file format comes under vector image file format –

SVG
SVG stands for Scalable Vector Graphics. It defines the graphics in XML format. You can create and edit with any text editor. Its images are scalable and zoomable.

AI
AI stands for Adobe Illustrator. This format is strictly limited in use. You can only create and edit in Adobe Illustrator. People use it for creating logos, illustrations, and print layouts.

EPS
EPS stands for Encapsulated PostScript.You can create and edit in Adobe Illustrator. Although, People using it for logos because resize is easily done with it.

PDF
It stands for portable document format. It works in both raster and vector file format. You need a pdf reader to read the PDF file. People using it when they need to save files that cannot be modified. Still, need to be easily shared and printed. PDF is free to use and use for distributing read-only documents.
